At SPUD we know the importance of quality meat. In moderation.

In response to the World Health Organization’s report on processed meat we want to share some important facts about SPUD’s meat, our ingredients, as well as meat alternatives.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer declared processed meats a Category 1 carcinogen to humans, a highly dangerous classification. The report states consuming over 50 grams (no more than three pieces of bacon) per day of processed meat will increase your likelihood of cancer by 18%. Adding harmful preservatives, and curing, the process of using nitrates to enhance flavour, keep longer and look fresher, are both practices banned from SPUD products.

At SPUD we have NEVER carried products with added chemical nitrates and nitrites.

At SPUD we don’t carry products with artificial flavours, preservatives, nitrites or nitrates. We only source high quality ethical meats and are constantly looking at ways we can better our product quality standards while still having the items that our customers want. We have a list of banned ingredients and nitrites and nitrates are on it.

Although red meat and processed meats such as bacon, salami, and jerky are not guilt-free, as long as they are eaten in moderation and in the best form as possible, these splurge foods do not have to be entirely cut out of our diets. In the words of Michael Pollan: “Eat food. Mostly plants. Not a lot”. Maintain a healthy diet, and moderate treats are welcome.

SPUD wants you to enjoy what you eat, and feel good about it too. We want to be as transparent as possible with our customers when it comes to buying the most ethical, sustainable, and highest quality products. As a SPUD customer, you can trust us to make the right decision when it comes to your health, but you can also keep us accountable.
