What’s better than a hot, relaxing bath at the end of the day? A hot, relaxing bath with detoxifying benefits—and maybe with Mariah Carey belting ‘Vision of Love’ in the background. Many of us take baths to wind down after a long day, but hot baths actually do reset your body in more ways than you might know.
Baths help with cleansing, resting your mind, relaxing your internal systems, and soothing sore muscles. And with a little help from certain ingredients, you can easily enhance the benefits of your bath. Here are two simple ingredients you can find in your pantry to help expel those toxins. Combining both ingredients will optimise the effects, but they also work well individually if you’re short on supply.
1. Epsom Salts
Also known as magnesium sulphate, epsom salts are not actually salts but simply a mineral compound of magnesium and sulphate—and they are definitely not for cooking. They do, however, make amazing baths. Although both magnesium and sulphate are both critical nutrients that can be found in our food, they are surprisingly difficult to absorb from the food we eat. As such, soaking in a bath of epsom salts can improve insufficiencies of these nutrients as they can be readily absorbed through the skin.
Epsom salts are particularly useful for nerve function, muscle soothing, inflammation, heart and circulatory health, blood pressure regulation, and of course, toxin elimination. To use, simply dissolve two cups of epsom salt or epsom soak in your bathtub and soak for up to 30 minutes.

2. Baking Soda
Baking soda is more than just a cooking ingredient. It’s actually one of the best ingredients used to make a detoxifying bath. It’s accessible, natural, safe, and inexpensive, and chances are, you already have some in your pantry. Officially known as “bicarbonate of soda,” this powder helps in regulating pH levels, so if your diet consists a lot of acidic foods like red meat, dairy, or packaged foods, the neutralisation effect of baking soda will help balance your pH.
Baking soda is perfect for haemorrhoids, yeast infections, soreness, itchy skin, and even certain digestive impairments. To make baking soda bath, take four cups of baking soda to dissolve in your bathtub, and soak in for up to 45 minutes.
