Bite-sized fruits are always the most enjoyable and convenient when it comes to snacking and portability. And in terms of healthy fruits, few exceed the tomato—yes, it’s a fruit—in nutrient content. And the tiny grape tomato is no exception.
Grape tomatoes are very healthy.
Although small, the grape tomato packs a mighty boost of nutrients. Like all tomatoes, this miniature varietal is naturally rich in lycopene, a vitamin A compound that acts as an antioxidant. This powerful antioxidant can help in reducing the risk of heart diseases and various cancers by fighting free radicals that damage healthy cells in the body.
Each grape tomato offers about 0.5 gram of fibre. This might sound a bit low, but keep in mind you could probably like fifteen of these in your mouth. Fibre is essential for regulating bowel movements and keeping the digestive system healthy. If you think you’re low on fibre, grape tomatoes are a great addition to the diet amongst other high-fibre foods.
In terms of carbohydrates, grape tomatoes provide just a bit more than one gram per tomato. All of the cells in our body require glucose—the broken down molecules of carbohydrates—in order to function properly.
They’ve become super popular for many reasons.
Grape tomatoes have a much more resilient skin compared to other smaller tomatoes like cherry tomatoes, allowing them to travel well, last longer, and ultimately be accessible year-round. And although these tomatoes are slightly less sweet, many prefer the meatier texture as opposed to the pop and juiciness of a cherry tomato.
These tiny tomatoes are often the go-to for garnishes, in a hamburger, on top of any sauce-heavy pasta, or even just tossed in a salad. And of course, they’re equally great on their own.
