You’ve been told that you need to consume fish at least twice a week for its supreme nutrients, but with such a wide variety of fish, how do you know which type of fish you should be eating? Oily fish are known for their rich omega-3 fatty acids content, and while not overly oily, the halibut is still a great source for this highly sought-after substance. Halibut is known for its unique taste and firm texture. The meat is mild, delicate, and sweet, and its firm texture and few bones make it highly versatile and a culinary favourite, as it can be grilled as steaks, cooked as fillets, or simply sautéed.

Why halibut is the key to a healthy heart.

Omega-3 fatty acids boast unparalleled health benefits for the heart. Many of their properties directly address the various causes of coronary and cardiovascular diseases. These fatty acids help decrease the risk of heart attacks by stabilising heart rhythms. They are key components for high-blood pressure by reducing triglycerides, and regulating cholesterol levels by improving the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol. Omega-3 fatty acids are also helpful in reducing inflammation, which is not only a major cause of heart diseases but also arthritis and cancer.

A very nutrient-dense fish.

Halibut is an excellent source of phosphorus and vitamin D, both of which aid in the maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. They also offer significant protection against diseases and conditions such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and cancer. These flatfish are also good sources of B vitamins: B3, B6, B9, and B12. These important vitamins shield the arteries from a destructive amino acid called homocysteine. This particular amino acid can cause injuries to artery walls and increase the risk of atherosclerosis–an artery disease developed by plaque build-up.

Essential nutrients including magnesium, selenium, and protein are also highly present in halibut. Magnesium improves blood flow, thus helping to evenly distribute nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. Selenium is an antioxidant that helps the process of detoxification by assisting in maintaining a healthy liver. And high-quality protein found in halibut is a crucial component in bones, muscles, skin, and blood.

If you ever find yourself lost at the seafood counter of a supermarket, give the halibut a shot. Make sure the meat is bright white, eyes moist and clear, and scales shiny. This way you’ll know your halibut is fresh.
