Here’s something you’ve got to try before it becomes cool: the hipster steak. Also known as a minute steak, the hipster steak is a thin slab of meat that cooks very quickly—in a minute, basically. They are inexpensive and perfect for any budget-conscious cook, or anyone who’s on a time crunch and still want to whip up a nice gourmet dinner!
So what is so special about these hipster steaks?
Sometimes they’ll be steaks that are cut thinly, but oftentimes hipster steaks are simply steaks that have been pounded down and tenderised with a mallet, so you don’t have to waste any time tenderising it yourself! And because hipster steaks are so thin, they are great for a quick and easy meal. It’s fast to cook, and it’s easy because it cooks evenly without having to give too much attention.
How should I cook these steaks?
These steaks are usually pan-fried as other methods like broiling or baking often results in a chewier-than-desired toughness. The shorter the cooking time, the better. And although they are sold tenderised, marinating the meat in ingredients like apple cider vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, or even beer will tenderise it further, and add more flavour.
Red-Wine Marinated Hipster Steak with Chimichurri Recipe
What you need:
For the steak and marinade:
4 tbsp red wine
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp dijon mustard
2 tbsp olive oil
For the chimichurri:
1/2 cup parsley
1/4 cup olive oil
3 tbsp red wine vinegar
1/8 cup cilantro
1 garlic clove
1/4 tsp salt
Red hot pepper chopped to taste
How to prepare:
- Whisk together the red wine, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, honey, dijon mustard, and olive oil for the marinade. And place the steak in the marinade, covering as much of the meat as possible. A couple hours of marinating will allow any steak to soak up the flavours. Of course, the longer the better, but because hipster steak is already tenderised, a good 15 minutes will do for this recipe if you’re on a time crunch.
- Put all the ingredients for the chimichurri in a food processor, and process until pureed.
- Pour a bit of oil into a skillet and let it heat up over high heat for 1 minute. Then place the steak in the skillet and sear for about 45 seconds on each side. Then remove from heat.
- Place a desired amount of chimichurri on the steak to serve.
