Heritage Day is here! Whether you’re using the long weekend to go hiking, camping, planning a canoe trip, having an outdoor barbeque, or just relaxing at home, you’ll want to have nourishing vegetables and fruits with you. Celebrate Heritage Day in style with some of these in-season local produce.

Portabello mushrooms, also known as steaks for vegetarians, are the largest of cultivated mushrooms. With meatier and firmer textures, these mushrooms are perfect for grilling in the hot outdoors. With mushrooms producing some of the world’s most powerful natural medicines, Portobello mushrooms are no exception to the long list of benefits. Low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and high in fibre, the king of mushrooms are also fantastic sources of copper, B-complex Vitamins, minerals, and contains more potassium than a banana.

Have you ever tried to eliminate tomatoes from your diet? It’s nearly impossible! Whether in soups, salads, pastas, or sauces, tomatoes have seemingly endless culinary usages. They also have an excellent amount of Vitamin C and E, folate, potassium, and beta-carotene. Cooking tomatoes enhances the lycopene and beta-carotene content.

Peppers, whether green, yellow, orange, or red, are versatile culinary superstars that can be enjoyed raw or cooked! They are at their best during the summer, and with three times more Vitamin C than an orange, don’t miss on these on Heritage Day! They are also an excellent source of Vitamin A and are high in antioxidant content.

Ever wondered why Popeye always attributed his super strength to spinach? Spinach is one of the world’s favourite superfoods, containing large amounts of iron, Vitamin A, folate, magnesium, and potassium. They are delicious either cooked or served fresh in a salad.

Cucumbers are another summer favourite with hydrating components. They are crisp, juicy, refreshing, and have excellent digestive qualities. You can enjoy them by putting slices into your water, on crackers, as a side garnish, on its own, or even on your eyes to soothe dark circles. The options are endless when it comes to cucumbers.
