FOOD FOR THOUGHT ON HEALTHY EATING FROM OUR RESIDENT VEGAN

Some thoughts on healthy eating:

Regardless of our eating style; whether we are an omnivore, vegetarian, vegan or just a plant-based eater, we are all susceptible to not eating a healthy diet. Junk food comes in all shapes and sizes and more often than not, it is presented to be delicious. I think a large part of the problem is that most quick snacks and fast foods have a substantial amount of processed sugar in them along with a plethora of man-made additives and preservatives.

In these times, we all feel so busy that making meals and snacks from scratch seems impossible so we resort to quick and easy instead. In the typical household, both parents work and kids are subjected to their parent’s food choices hence we are creating a new generation of eaters who will only know “shortcuts”. I think it is very sad not to mention it is making it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Even regular exercise can’t combat a poor diet forever and I think everyone needs to get back to basics in order to overcome poor health.

I have had friends say to me that if they could cook like me they too would become vegan or at least eat plant-based but I think what it comes down to is taking the time to learn new cooking styles. Humans, as a whole, are not great with change so we fall back to what we know and what we have been taught instead of trying something new.

If you are intimidated by cooking completely from scratch using healthy ingredients, I recommend taking a cooking class or two. Aside from the knowledge you will gain, it can be a fun way to get you interested in creating a healthy eating meal plan for you and your family. In most cities, there are numerous places that offer cooking classes for all ages and skills at reasonable costs as well as many online courses available. Personally, I like the interaction from other participants in live classes but you should do whatever suits your lifestyle.

Cooking can be fun and is a great way to engage kids so they can learn to cook from an early age which in turn will help them maintain healthy eating habits as they get older. You will also help to create a generation of people who know how to nourish their bodies with real food instead of junk food!
