THIS SWEET, SALTY, ‘CHEEZY’ POPCORN FROM OUR RESIDENT VEGAN WILL MEET ALL SNACKING CRITERIA

A while ago before we embraced a plant based diet, we discovered a bagged Chicago style popcorn that, odd as it seems, combined a mix of cheese and caramel in one bag. The surprising combination was truly delicious though I am sure, based on the ingredient list, not especially a healthy snack. Since becoming vegan, butter based caramel and dairy based cheese are simply not on our menu any longer.

I have mentioned before that nutritional yeast has become a favourite topping on our hot air popcorn along with some salt and avocado oil. Well I recently created my own vegan version of the Chicago style popcorn that we used to eat and personally, I find this one to be much better, not to mention, a little healthier.

We have a hot air popper which is my recommended appliance for making fresh popcorn and it doesn’t use microwave energy to make hot, fluffy popcorn.

1 large bowl of hot popcorn

¼ to ½ cup of avocado oil

Salt to taste

¼ to ½ cup nutritional yeast

¼ cup of maple sugar (I think coconut sugar would also work)

Slowly pour over the popcorn the avocado oil, stirring gently. Add salt, nutritional yeast and sugar, stirring gently to evenly coat the popcorn. This is a yummy snack to eat while watching your favourite movie or sports program! Enjoy!
