2020 is a year most of us would like to forget, but don’t let holiday traditions fade away. One of my favourite holiday traditions is baking and sharing sweet treats with my friends and loved ones. One way I am going to do it this year is by hosting a virtual cookie swap. With my friends and family across the country, this is the perfect opportunity to try something new while keeping traditions that are so near and dear to my heart alive! This is how I am going to do it.
Pick a virtual cookie swap captain!
The cookie captains’ job will be to coordinate the cookie selection deadlines, collecting addresses and shipping deadline and ultimately the day the cookie Zoom party will meet. Tip: keep it simple! Too many people will get overly confusing and could cause shipping delays.
Coronavirus transmission by food is unlikely, according to experts. But always remember to wash your hands before, during and after cooking. If you are sick, do not make food for others.
Pick your cookies carefully.
Think of sturdy cookies that will survive shipping or delivery. Also, pick cookies that do not need to be temperature-controlled and can last several days. Picture them on a sweet platter.
Think about how many people are involved in the cookie exchange and how many cookies each person wants. I suggest a minimum of 12 each, but that is because I love cookies! Also consider how many people are in the household, bigger, add more, smaller maybe half it!
Pack in reusable containers.
If you are mailing cookies, make sure the container is uncrushable, and if you are delivering it to their door, pick one that will withstand the elements! It is also a fun item to decorate or use year after year!
Wait for cookies to arrive.
The hardest part is waiting for all these delicious treats to arrive. Once they have come, pick a date that works for everyone, grab your glass of milk (nut milk works too) or a cocktail and enjoy the cookies, give your honest review and of course catch up!
