Pesto: a mouth-watering classic

Oh Pesto! Most of the world has had a long-term love affair with this simple, yet delectable sauce that originated in Italy. Traditionally made with sweet basil, hard salty cheeses, olive oil, garlic, and pine nuts. Countless variations of the dish can be found however as people have gotten creative and have come up with different recipes to suit everyone’s palate and diet.

Thanks to companies like Golda’s though, traditional pesto recipes that use only the finest ingredients are still readily available. You’ll find their classic and vegan green pesto on special at Spud this week. Use this mouth-watering classic on anything from pasta and fish to sandwiches and pizza.

In 1992, company founder Richard Lewin, was a stay-at-home dad with a flair for cooking. He began to mix fresh, wholesome ingredients into unique and tasty pesto sauces in Mill Bay, on Vancouver Island.

His daughter Golda, aged 4, was his product taste-tester and became the first of many loyal fans to come. That’s her name and image on all the product labels! Golda today, pictured above, still helps Richard try out exciting new flavors!

Freeman, Golda’s younger brother, joined the family enterprise too. Freeman helps grow fresh basil, a variety of herbs, and other produce used for Golda’s Finest Foods from a local farm known as Freeman’s Farm and Seeds. True to tradition, Freeman’s produce is free of pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides.i
